MANILA, Philippines – OPPO won the second quarter of 2019 in terms of total smartphone shipment in the Philippines, according to analyst firm Canalys.
OPPO took a 28% share of the market, followed by Samsung with 19%, and Vivo at 17%.
In the overall Southeast Asian market, OPPO finished second shipping a total of 7.3 million units, its best-ever quarterly performance in the region, representing a 49% year-on-year growth. Samsung, still the worldwide leader, is also the top-selling brand in the region this quarter with 7.7 million shipped. Rounding out the region's top 5 are Vivo with 4.1 million shipped, Xiaomi with 3.7 million, and Realme with 1.6 million.
Samsung is said to be "fighting back" in Southeast Asia to hold off the Chinese challengers, rapidly rolling out and marketing phones like the A-series and M-series. Analyst Matthew Xie said the M-series, in particular, "did well in volume, so the strategy is working."
Another analyst, Shengtao Jin, said OPPO has been moving quite aggressively too, trying to overtake Samsung in the region. Jin said OPPO helped itself by spinning off Realme into its own brand last year, allowing it to expand aggressively. Its top-sellers, however, remain the budget A5s and the A3s, so it's still "facing challenges when trying to position itself as a high-end alternative to Samsung."

It looks like Toyota has more up its sleeve for next month than just the all-new Corolla Altis—the compact sedan’s hybrid version is coming to our market, too.
Toyota Motor Philippines has already sent out invitations for its next launch in September, officially revealing what model it’s bringing to the Philippines: the next-generation Corolla Altis.
Most of you guys already knew that, but the car manufacturer’s invitation also mentions the beginning of a “new hybrid era” and bringing “hybrid electric vehicles closer to Filipinos.” There’s little to no doubt that the company is referring to the nameplate’s hybrid variant.
As we reported based on images of an all-new Corolla Altis spotted in Laguna sent by a reader, it appears we’re getting sedan units similar to the ones revealed at the 2018 Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition in China. So far, there’s been no indication we’ll be seeing the aggressive-looking hatchback version being sold in the US and Europe.
Hybrid units in China look almost exactly the same as the unit spotted in Santa Rosa earlier this month—which is perfectly fine because the vehicle still looks rather nice with is sleek, swept-back headlights and stylish lines.

MANILA, Philippines – Samsung seems to be pulling out all the stops when it comes to this year’s flagship offerings having launched 4 Galaxy S10 models and announcing the novel if troubled Galaxy Fold. But, not to be overlooked is the Galaxy Note 10, the company’s next generation of stylus-packing flagships, which is set to be unveiled at their Unpacked event in Brooklyn, New York on August 7.
Here's everything we know so far:
Models and variants
Korean news site ETNews reported that Samsung is working on 2 Note 10 models: one with a 6.28-inch screen and another with a 6.75-inch screen. Each of the 2 models will reportedly have 2 variants: one that only supports LTE and one that supports 5G. This means that like the S10, we could see up to 4 different Note 10 phones launched at the event.
The report adds that it’s unusual for the Galaxy Note series to have multiple models, but this could be Samsung’s attempt at maximizing sales volume and attracting more purchases by segmenting the market.
