Samsung has had a bad week. First more major Galaxy S11 details leaked, then the Galaxy S10 and Note 10 were caught up in an embarrassing security debacle. And now there’s another reason to skip Samsung’s 2019 smartphones altogether.
In separate reports, acclaimed Korean site The Elec and popular Samsung insider Ice Universe have revealed Samsung will release a smartphone next year with the camera built under the display. Furthermore, it won’t launch in the models you expect.
“Samsung will launch an under display camera phone next year! Not S11, not Fold 2,” said Ice Universe in a cryptic tweet.
Adding flesh to these bones, The Elec explained that Samsung calls the technology ‘UDC’ (literally, Under Display Camera) internally and it works by integrating a transparent display over the punch hole. The result is no notch, no punch hole and no need for a pop-up camera. Manufacturing will begin this month with the company “planning to bring in mass production facilities early next year.”
Samsung has also been quite open about its plans in this area. Back in November 2018, Samsung product marketing director Hassan Anjum announced the ‘New Infinity’ display UDC panel and claimed they “are just around the corner, and I can’t wait to tell you more about them.”
Since then, Samsung has been silent but with rival Oppo revealing its plans for similar tech back in June and a recent telling patent from Samsung surfacing earlier this week, plans are clearly afoot. And if it won’t make the Galaxy S11 or the Galaxy Fold 2 (previous generations were announced in February) then it may well debut in the Galaxy Note 11.
Fitbit, the company behind the popular line of smartwatches and fitness trackers, has announced the availability of its new premium lifestyle smartwatch in the Philippines, the Versa 2. The watch comes with advanced features like Sleep Score, Smart Wake, Sleep Mode, and an Estimated Oxygen Variation Graph.
The Sleep Score will assess your slumber and give insights on your sleep quality based on your heart rate, restlessness, time awake, and sleep stages.
The Smart Wake function is still on its way to the smartwatch but soon enough, this feature will use machine learning to wake you during the optimal time of your sleep cycle. Once you’ve set an alarm, the watch will wake you up to 30 minutes before the set time during the lightest state of your cycle.
The Estimated Oxygen Variation Graph, like the Smart Wake, is not yet available but in the future, your Versa 2 will also provide the variability of oxygen levels in your bloodstream. This data comes from the combination of the red and infrared sensors on the back of the watch.
Apple earned some good press from U.S. tech media last month when it announced the iPhone 11 Pro would ship with an 18-watt fast charger, a jump from the putrid 5w brick. I didn’t even mention it–let alone applaud it–in my review, simply because I’m exposed to Chinese brands pushing smartphone charging technology much further.
A little under a year ago, I profiled Jeff Zhang, an engineer at Oppo who crafted the world’s fastest lithium-ion battery charging tech, which charged the 3,700 mAh battery of last fall’s R17 Pro in 35 minutes.
Zhang and his team has made another breakthrough. Today, Oppo announced in Beijing the Oppo Reno Ace, yet another variant of the Oppo Reno series. But there’s enough new tech here to justify the update: the Reno Ace supports Oppo’s new 65w super fast charging tech, dubbed SuperVOOC 2.0.

Oppo explains that 65w brick can add two hours of phone use time with just a five minute top up. That sounds very impressive–but also vague. So I conducted my own test. As can be seen in the video below, I plugged my Reno Ace with 16% battery into the 65w charger and cable (note: you must use Oppo’s own cable with the charger to achieve max speeds), and six and half minutes later, my battery was already at nearly 50%. By the time I checked back on the phone at the ten minute mark, my battery was at 64%.
